breath — a project by Edmund de Waal for Ivorypress
breath was a three-part project conceived by British artist Edmund de Waal for Ivorypress, comprising an artist’s book, an exhibition and a reading room.
The communication pieces conceived in the context of this exhibition reflect the materiality of the artist’s proposal. The use of gold hot-foil stamping is a direct reference to the gold leaf applied both in the artist’s book and the ceramics exhibited. The tall and narrow invitation card duplexed with a golden paper follows the delicate shape of porcelain tiles present in the show.
A limited-edition booklet was produced as a special promotional tool. A text by De Waal reflecting on the conception of the artist’s book was printed in letterpress. The booklet features various aspects of the artist’s book, including bits of the actual papers and tipped-in medieval manuscript fragments (hidden in the interior spine of the artist’s book), allowing for an intimate experience of touch of the original piece.
The tactility and natural feel of all the elements suggest the delicateness of the artist’s work.
