Wangechi Mutu. A Promise to Communicate
A Promise to Communicate is based on the eponymous site-specific participatory piece by Kenyan artist Wangechi Mutu at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston in 2018. It brings together a selection of writings and drawings inscribed by visitors on the museum’s wall, that highlight the power and urgency of communication.

These messages are a response to the invitation offered up by the artist’s installation. They were printed on translucent paper, which emulates the surprising dialogue that stemmed from the overlapping of writings on the gallery wall. Reading like a flip-book, the stories cross in superposed read-through layers. The book also includes a conversation between Wangechi Mutu and Ruth Erickson, the exhibition’s curator, that reflects on the communicative act in the space of a museum.

This book is part of Ivorypress LiberArs series, an ongoing collection of pocket-sized artist’s books presenting previously unpublished work.
